A Fun Monday
I woke up on a Monday morning dreading the week ahead, but as soon as I realized that CL day, a rush of excitement came to my head. I realized there was no class that day. I would be outdoors with my friends all day long.
I got ready for school skipping all over the house, I had muesli for breakfast as I needed good nutrition and energy for the day. I then got on my bike and rode to school. It was a calm cycle to school before the storm of a the fun to come in the day.
I got to school and then to homeroom just seconds before the bell would have marked me late. In home room Mr. Lindeman gave us a preview of the day. It sounded great. He talked all about what was happening and what it would serve and how the plan would be executed.
We made our way to the fish pond which was not yet a fish pond, but that’s what we were here to change. We got straight to work, digging up all the sides. There were ups and downs, including me being scared of a frog, but there were plenty more ups than downs. We were all working as a team to get the job done.
By break I was already exhausted, I scoffed down some food, I guess the muesli was not as filling as I thought it would be. During break, I talked to all my friends about what they were doing, I still thought I was in the best group.
After the short break, it was straight back to work. The teamwork was impeccable, we were getting everything done so fast, each and every person was assigned a job, I was at the loading baskets with dirt station. Even though this may not sound all that exciting it was really fun. It was a good challenge for me, not dying between each water break.
After approximately two hours it was time to refill our engines with fuel. We all marched to the cafeteria ready to eat like a horse. I sat with my friends and socialized. After eating we ran around playing football, as we weren’t tired enough already.
The bell went signaling advisory. We were all proud of what we accomplished during the long hard-working day. We got directly to work reflecting all the great things that happened during the day. We all put plenty of effort in what we wrote before being interviewed about how we thought the day went. I said that I thought everything was excellent and went smoothly due to all the participation and great teamwork from everybody.
Exhausted and tired I went home on my bicycle dreading the rest of the week wondering why every Monday could not be that fun.
Today we made packaging for the other CL group which made environmentally friendly hygiene products. The reason why we did this was to
1. learn how to recycle and reuse material
2. learn about marketing skills and
3. to unleash our creativity skills and to have fun while doing it.
It didn't really feel like we were actually unleashing those skills much until after lunch though.
The session was actually pretty fun, especially coming up with names. We kinda went a little crazy, but it was fun. I swear we came up with nearly a 100 names before we came across our favourite. Some people got so annoyed and it took us about 2 hours to come up with a name and a logo.
Another part that I really liked was painting. I was painting so fast that people were saying that I was on fire. It was really weird, but fun. I was on my 3rd box whilst others were on their 1st. That was how fast I was.
A part that I really disliked was when we had to stitch a little bit as part of our packaging. It was nearly painful to. Not literally, but most definitely figuratively. I had stitched before, but never through paper and cardboard!
I feel like to make it more fun, more people should have brought lots of different types of materials to reuse to make our packaging much more creative and fun.
This session made me think that we can do multiple things to reduce waste of packaging materials. For example, at Christmas time, a perfect time to save wrapping paper. Just be careful whilst opening it and vóila, you can use it again. Just make sure to NEVER give someone the wrapping paper that they gave to you :)
We set-up an irrigation system!!!
We wanted to set up a water tank as a source of water for the garden. The plan was to see if we could connect PVC pipes from the tank to 3 flower beds. If that would work, which it did, we would go along and connect to the other 3 beds.
We started off with a plan. While we were setting up the plan, we found a few flaws in it. What made me angry was that I had ideas to fix those flaws, but no one listened, and when someone else said my ideas which were the same as what I had said, they would call them great.
What I liked is how many of us worked together. Well, in our group some things went along really fast. For example, when we were setting up pipes and were cutting them. It moved along really fast because of the coordination we had. I loved working with my friends and working with people who I'm not comfortable with because it showed me how to get over my ego and just get it done without holding grudges.
I hated when people thought too much of themselves. We all got annoyed and frustrated at one point, but yet we all worked together without getting our egos in the way.
After break when we got back, we had a few problems. The pressure was a problem. We tried many experiments to fix it. After some time and a few tries, we managed to fix it. Soon enough we had all the pipes laid out and all we had to do was test it. After a few tries and making it work, we realized we had to make a way to spread the water through the beds. We used soaker hose and we lined the pipe around the bed cutting a few holes in the hose.
After we tried that, the pipes started to leak a little bit. We found a way to stop the leakage with special glue and connectors. Soon enough when we flipped the valves switch again, water came out!!!
It spread everywhere just as we thought it would.
It was a success!!!
First we went to the organic farm called Annadana. The word annadana means heritage seeds. When we got to the farm, Ms. Sangita gave us a tour of the farm and told us all about plants and animals there.
Afterwards, they let us choose a plant to take back to CIS. When we got back, we collected cup noodle cups from Cafe Coffee Day and planted some plants in them. We learned how to grow crops efficiently and how to recycle CCD cups.
I enjoyed how we were recycling Cafe Coffee Day cups for a better use, growing plants. We should recycle because it helps the environment and creates a better Earth. We can recycle by reusing old stuff we have and by reducing the amount of things we use.
In CL organic cosmetics, we had two experts, Ms.Suma and Ms.Vaishnavi, who came in to explain about why organic products are better. We learnt about ingredients and their natural benefits. We then learnt how to make a scrub, lotion, and deodorant. We made each of them and stored them in jars.
Then we had Ms.Sarika teach us about homemade soap making. In her very informative presentation, we learnt about the 100g formula. It is a formula of oils that equal to 100 grams. We used a scale to weigh coconut oil, palm oil, castor oil, and olive oil. Then we mixed a chemical called lye with water. We mixed both of the mixtures and blended it in a blender so it became a smooth paste. We then left it in the mould to set.
We learnt a lot that day and hope to make a difference by using these products instead.
For CL day 2, our group went to iAim healthcare centre. If you’ve never been there, it’s a place where they keep herbs or plants that are for medicinal purposes.
Our day started off by listening to the history of iAim and even how medicinal plants came into use. For a lot of us this was all just recap and it was refreshing our minds about what iAim really is.
Next off we went to a place where there all kinds of medicinal plants ( I am not 100% sure what that room was called ). A lady, Dr. Nuri if I am not mistaken, introduced us to the plants and how they’ve stored them through the years. Again we had visited this room before but something new that caught all our attention was the snake skin. We were not able to get the use of the skin but we do know that it was a cobra’s.
Our final thing in iAim was to gather plants for us to plant with the SK kids. We went to the garden and a lady showed us the plants and explained to us the functions of each. It was tedious and boring because the name of the plant was already there and even the functions on a board that stood in front of the plant but I guess she just needed something to do. After the mini tour, we all got to choose our plants. We really had to pick pretty ones otherwise the SK kids probably wouldn’t like doing it with us.
Our last activity for the day was to paint the tires with the kids. Painting was fun with the kids. They were all very enthusiastic to paint. I think they liked the fact we were painting minions. We got the job done under time and I would say everyone did a fantastic job. Even the little ones! We placed the plants in the pot and there was something from us middle school to the elementary kids.
All in all I think most of us found the morning boring, but the afternoon fun and enjoyable.
Today, we learned about the bats and got to build the bat boxes. For the first two periods, we planned our bat boxes and started building it. It was very fun to pound nails with hammer. Some of the wood was already cut in correct sizes, but some were not, so we had to cut it.
After break, we went to the Odium to learn more about bats from the people from People for Animals, Bangalore. I learnt that many bats in India are rescued because of people. After lunch, we had another talk about bats and the environment. They started from the Big Bang Theory to the way the environment is right now. It was very interesting.
After watching presentations, we continued building bat boxes that we did not finish during first 2 periods. When I finished making bat boxes, I was so proud of my self.
30th October was our 2nd CL day. We first went to our own home rooms for 10 minutes and we
found out our schedule for the day.
After we finished with that, we went to our chosen CL topic class. I had POSTCARD MAKING. I had 2 wonderful teachers who were going to be guiding us through our amazing CL day. Teachers- Mister Sandeep and Miss Fay.
Mister Sandeep explained what we had to do for our 1st session, which was to make paper out off old pare fresh leaves and water. We had to tear the paper into small pieces and we also had to fill a cup of water and flower petals and leaves enough for one sheet. We put all these items into a blender and blended it till it turned into pulp. We poured all the pulp into a big plastic tray/bucket and used our hands to mix it. We took the mesh from the other table and put it inside the tray/bucket and put the pulp on the mesh. We let all the water drip so there was only a paper kind of texture left on the mesh. Then we took a cloth and we flipped the mesh around and took a sponge and we soaked up all the extra water that was not needed. Afterwards, we folded the edges of the cloth onto the paper and we put it under a big slab of stone and let it dry.
Then we had a 30 minute recess. After that we went back to class and we started with our second session where we worked with paper that mister Sandeep bought from the market which was also handmade. We had to cut the paper to make it look like a card. For it to be a certain size, we had to stick another colour paper of our choice on top of that, so we could stick our dried leaves on the front of it.
We were all very hungry and it was already time for lunch. We all ran out for lunch at 12:00pm and came back at 12:50pm and it was time for session 3; what we were all waiting for. We finally got to use the dried flowers that we picked 2 weeks before. This was the most fun part of the whole
I think the class worked very well as groups because everybody got a fare amount of work. One person would chose the flowers for the card, the other would glue them on, the other would check to see if it is stuck properly and the last one would put it under a pile of books and let it dry. After that they would put it in a plastic bag and keep it in a separate pile.
Then we got a 5 minute break to go do whatever we wanted all of us went down to the green area. It was almost the end of the day, but we had one last task to do. We had to write our CL journals using certain questions that we had. One girl was assigned to ask questions about the CL day and it seemed like they had a lot of fun.
DISCLAIMER- ALL THE CARDS WE MADE WERE SOLD AND THE MONEY WE MADE WAS GIVEN TO CHARITY.
