Today, we went to Tharangini which is a local art centre. There, artisans are decorating cloth with block print, making jewelry and making embroidery with some beads. Of course, they were all hand-made! We were challenged to decorate a hand bag. There were lots of varieties of block print designs: flowers, owls, stars, phoenix, elephants, bubbles, hearts, etc. For most of the students, it was their first time to block print and everyone seemed to have fun. When we got confused, the staff supported us and it was very helpful. We decorated both sides of the handbag.
Afterwards, we saw the workshop of jewellery making. There were so many jewels displayed and those were so beautiful and it looked very difficult to make them. However, the maker told us that it takes about 2 days for making one piece of jewelry. It is so fast. And then, we saw workshop of embroidery. The makers were embroidered with beads and shiny, curly threads to decorate. This cloth would be used for sally etc. It looked they put in a lot of effort and time into making it.
Although block printing was challenging, today was a delighted and memorable Contextual Learning day. And I say to the Tharangini staff: "Thank you for inviting us to Tharangini!".
